Geocronologia

A datação em spot de U-Pb e Pb-Pb é uma revolução da geocronologia. Por meio deste método, os recordes da rocha mais antiga foram quebrados. Com o auxílio de SHRIMP, o gneiss presente no Lago Akasta, Território Noroeste da Canadá, indicou a idade de 3695 Ma. Um estudo posterior da mesma rocha por meio de LA-ICP-MS determinou uma idade mais antiga, aproximadamente 4200Ma. Neste momento, esta é a idade da rocha mais antiga do mundo.
